STAIR MOULDING

Demystifying Stair Moulding: An Essential Guide

Stair moulding is a decorative trim applied to the top and bottom staircases. It is also known as string, spindle, or handrail moulding. The purpose of stair moulding is to cover the gap between the stairs and the wall on each side. Generally, stair moulding is made of wood, metal, plastic, or PVC.

Stair treads are the horizontal parts of the stairs that sustain maximum footfall. They are supported by stringers, which are vertical pieces that hold together two treads simultaneously. Stringers are usually made of wood or metal and come in many different styles and finishes depending on the application. There are three main categories of stair treads:

  • Solid (one piece)
  • Slotted (two pieces),
  • Engineered (multiple pieces).

Some applications require special features such as handrails or balustrades. These are often constructed from steel or aluminium rather than wood because they need to support more weight than a traditional staircase. With that said, let’s discuss the types of stair moulding described in the next section.

What Are the Types of Stair Moulding?

Stair moulding is a type of trim used to give the stairs more character and make them look attractive. But today, many types of stair moulding are available in the market. Here we will discuss the different types of stair moulding and their functionalities.

  • No-Overhang Stair Nosing

It is the most basic type of stair-nosing. It’s a simple rectangle that covers the front edge of the treads and risers of your stairs.

  • Square Stair Nosing

Square stair nosing is similar to no-overhang stair nosing, but it has a square shape instead of a rectangular one.

  • Pencil Round Stair Nosing

Pencil round stair nosing has a rounded shape that matches the curve of your stairs. It’s typically used as an alternative to square or no-overhang stair nosings, but it can also be used on straight flights if necessary.

  • Half-Round Stair Nosing

This type of stair-nosing is the most common and works well on straight flights. It also works well with curved staircases, but it’s important to ensure that the curve’s radius is equal to or greater than the radius of your half-round stair nosing. It will help prevent gaps between the steps and the nosing.

  • Full Round Stair Nosing

Full round stair nosings add style and elegance to curved staircases. They are also used with straight flights of stairs when you need a smooth transition from one step to another—in other words if you want a nice transition between your straight and curved steps.

Different Design Patterns for Stair Moulding!

Stair moulding is a detail that can enhance the staircase’s appearance and make it more functional. Several styles of stair moulding are available, each with a different structural appearance and functionality.

  • L-shaped

The L-shaped design is used to create staircases with the appearance of a straight line but which curves in at the top. This design allows for the use of thinner materials than other designs.

  • Winder

The winder design creates stairs with a curved top edge and square bottom edge. This design also allows for the use of thinner materials than other designs because it does not require as much depth.

  • U-shaped

The U-shaped design creates stairs with an inverted V on both sides of the rungs. This design requires a lot of material because it requires two surfaces (one on each side) while maintaining an overall flat look at the bottom edge of each step.

  • Spiral

This pattern is made up of spirals that wind around the staircase in either an upward or downward direction. It offers a modern feel but can also be used to add traditional details to a project.
